Firefly Lane may not be the nyakumi film that goes on to win awards, but it’s entertaining nevertheless, thanks in large part to Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke. For Netflix’s latest dose of cozy blanket viewing and pumpkin spice realness, the two actors leave Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs for something far more wholesome.
You’re probably wondering when you’ll be able to take your next walk down Firefly Lane after devouring ten episodes of addicting drama and questionable wigs. The good news is that, yes, the series has been renewed for a second season – the only bad news is that there isn’t a set release date yet. Here’s everything you need to know about Firefly Lane season two.

Firefly Lane Season 2 Cast
With all the drama on Firefly Lane, you can’t be too safe when it comes to snuffing out life. At the very least, we’re almost certain to see the following personalities return in season two:
Katherine Heigl as Tully HartAli Skovbye as Young TullySarah Chalke as Kate MularkeyRoan Curtis as Young KateBen Lawson as Johnny RyanBeau Garrett as CloudYael Yurman as Marah, Kate’s teenage daughter
Ben might not make it to a potential second season though if that finale cliffhanger is anything to go by…
“The Johnny moment, I knew for sure was going to come,” creator Maggie Friedman told Entertainment Weekly.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 4: Final Release Date Updates
“In the writer’s room, we had all these big whiteboards and that particular moment – we called it Johnny Goes Boom – we knew that was happening then the whole season. I knew that Tully and Kate were going to be estranged at the end of the season, but I didn’t know how I was going to dramatise that. I knew we were working towards that signpost because I felt like a good cliffhanger for season one is: ‘Oh my God, wait, these Firefly Lane girls forever are suddenly not? What happened?’ I wanted to leave the audience with some big questions.”
Some new additions to the cast for season two have also been announced.
Deadline reports that Greg German, best known for his role as Tom Koracick on Grey’s Anatomy, will play Benedict Binswanger, the son of an important family who wants to use his business success to enter politics in the 1980s.
“I’m so in the bubble of who this guy [Koracick] is and has been that I don’t really think about what other people think about him,” he said. “I stay away from that a little bit because, from my point of view, he’s trying to do the right thing. I accept maybe some people might think I’m a bit abrasive, but that’s their problem!”
Firefly Lane Season 2 Plot Explained
“I think there are a lot more stories to tell, if we’re lucky enough to have a season two, of those girls going through high school and what that’s like,” Friedman told EW before the series was renewed.
“They’re only in eighth grade when we leave them. They’ll have a lot of good teen years and fun seventies, growing up times with the great music and the fashions and all of the cultural changes. I think it’s just really interesting. I’d love to keep telling us that those stories and those actors are so good, so of course, I would want to keep seeing them and Beau [Garrett], who plays Cloud, is so great.”
Friedman told Collider that she’s hoping for “multiple seasons”, and you know what that means? Plenty more wig action.
“The very first day of work was literally [Heigl] and I in the hair and makeup trailer with the hair and makeup artists and we’re literally trying these characters on, trying to find them, putting on wigs and laughing our heads off,” Chalke told The Wrap. The final moments of Firefly Lane’s first season are… well, they’re a lot. Out of all the mysteries the finale sets up, perhaps the most pivotal is why does Kate hate Tully so much in the near future?
“When I said I could never forgive you for what you did, what do you think that meant?” Kate says as she turns her best friend away from her own father’s funeral.
In the final season of Grey’s Anatomy, Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Katherine Heigl (Kelli Williams) deal with a complex situation when they are on a break from their marriage. As you may recall, this was a HUGE source of drama for them throughout Season 5! As things stood at the end of Season 10, Johnny seems to be out all hope.
“It can’t be that Tully sleeps with Johnny. I don’t think that any friendship can come back from that. I’ll fight to the death that it not be that,” said Heigl.
In Kristin Hannah’s novel, a rift develops after Tully invites Kate and her daughter Marah to discuss their relationship on live TV. “Tully was trying to help but in a really thoughtless way that was all about Tully,” says Katherine. “she nyakumi doesn’t realise that she’s publicly humiliating her friend on live television, and at the same time, taking the 14-year-old’s side. That would be enough to put a serious rift in the friendship.”
Whether that happens on the show remains to be seen, but what about Johnny? Will he survive the explosion that devastated his group in Iraq?
The answers to this and other questions may be found in the source material, but it’s conceivable that Netflix will deviate from this to keep audiences guessing. Let’s hope they do, because in the latter half of the book (which is expected to serve as season two’s basis), a tragedy strikes that Kate and Tully can’t simply walk away from.
